First Tranche 2 Typhoons Arrive at RAF Coningsby - 21st October 2008

On the 21st October the first pair of second generation Typhoon aircraft arrived at RAF Coningsby. FGR.4s ZJ946 & ZJ947 flew in from BAe Systems Warton factory, where following final system checks and modifications they will be released for flight trials with 17(R) Sqn, the Typhoon Operational Evaluation Unit. Once the OEU has completed the flight trials, both aircraft are expected to transfer to a front line Squadron during January 2009.

Although externally Tranche 2 aircraft look no different to the current Typhoon, they have in fact more powerful computers and a strengthened airframe to enable the carriage of heavier weapons in the ground-attack role.

The Royal Air Force expects to take delivery of a further 89 aircraft under the Tranche 2 contract - initially six aircraft per year will be delivered, with this figure rising to an eventual 20 per annum for the next seven years.
