de Havilland Vintage Air Tour – East Kirkby 16th August 2008

The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby recently hosted a leg of the 2008 de Havilland Moth Vintage Air Tour. Unfortunately the weather wasn't as kind as it could have been, and although bright and sunny at East Kirkby the cross wind gusted up to 20 knots at times, and with deteriorating weather conditions forecasted for later in the day this deterred a number of the participants from dropping in during their planned three day tour around the United Kingdom.

Out of the 44 de Havilland Moth variants booked to attend, unfortunately only 16 aircraft made it onto East Kirkby’s lovely grass strip. However it was a case of quality over quantity, with Moth variants in attendance ranging from G-ECAN, a glorious DH.84 Dragon to the majestic DH.90 Dragonfly G-AEDU and DH.85 Leopard Moths G-ACUS, G-AIYS & G-ACMN; with only four Leopard Moths on the UK register, to have three together on the same airfield was a most pleasing sight. 72 year old DH.87B Hornet Moth G-ADNE joined the line up, with G-AELO and G-ADKC – all three looked resplendent in their red paint schemes.

The DH.82A Tiger Moth was the most numerous type present, with six noted in various civilian and wartime schemes. Queen Bee G-BLUZ/LF858 was also another welcome visitor; built as a radio-controlled gunnery target the aircraft is imaginatively restored in its authentic wartime colours.

Cessna 180 Skywagon G-CIBO was the only non de Havilland type present, however this 27 year old aircraft looked absolutely pristine and not at all out of place amongst the more senior aircraft.

The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre is to be congratulated for hosting such an event, and hopefully the de Havilland Moth Club can be convinced to return on another occasion in the near future.
